Oman is situated in the south-east part of the Arabian Peninsula, with coastlines on both the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman. In 1970 the present Sultan, Qaboos Bin Said, deposed his father and began to use the immense oil revenues to improve the social conditions in his country. Oil production began in 1967 and is now responsible for 90% of government revenue. Most of the population are Ibadhi Muslims and the official language is Arabic.
